Global K-pop phenomenon BTS has announced that it will not submit its music for consideration at the 2027 Grammy Awards, making a powerful statement about how music should be evaluated on the international stage.
All seven members—RM, Suga, j-hope, Jimin, V, Jung Kook, and Jin—shared an identical message on Wednesday, emphasizing their hope that their work will be appreciated without being defined by geography or language.
“We hope our music can be heard and loved for what it is, rather than being divided by region or language. We thank ARMY and everyone who has always stood by us.”
The announcement comes just weeks after the Recording Academy unveiled five new Grammy categories for the 2027 ceremony, including Best Asian Pop Music Performance, a category designed to recognize artists across K-pop, J-pop, C-pop, and other Asian pop genres.
A Decision That Sparks Industry Conversation
While the Recording Academy introduced the new category as a way to expand representation, the move has generated mixed reactions among fans and industry observers.
Many members of BTS’ global fanbase, known as ARMY, questioned whether creating a separate category for Asian pop unintentionally reinforces barriers rather than promoting inclusion. Critics argue that artists should compete alongside their peers in mainstream categories regardless of language or country of origin.
Although BTS did not directly reference the newly created category in its statement, the timing of the announcement has fueled speculation that the decision reflects broader concerns about how international artists are recognized within major Western award shows.

The group has earned five Grammy nominations, including three nominations for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, a nomination for Album of the Year through its contribution to Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres, and a nomination for Best Music Video for Yet to Come.
This year marked a milestone for K-pop at the Grammys when “Golden,” from Netflix’s animated film KPop Demon Hunters, won Best Song Written for Visual Media, becoming the first Grammy victory associated with a K-pop project. The achievement highlighted the genre’s growing influence while also underscoring the years of recognition many fans believe K-pop has deserved.
BTS Returns With ARIRANG
The announcement also follows BTS’ long-awaited return to music after nearly four years away as members fulfilled South Korea’s mandatory military service.
Earlier this year, the group released ARIRANG, a 14-track fifth studio album that was widely praised by critics and welcomed by fans as a triumphant new chapter. The project reaffirmed BTS’ position as one of the world’s most influential musical acts, blending emotional storytelling with the polished production that has defined the group’s global success.
