Selma Blair, Viola Davis, David Arquette and other stars shared emotional messages remembering the Heroes and Nashville actress.
Hollywood is mourning the sudden loss of Hayden Panettiere, the actress and singer known for her memorable roles in Heroes, Nashville and the Scream franchise, who died Sunday, Aug. 16, at the age of 36.
News of Panettiere’s death prompted an immediate wave of emotional tributes from actors, friends and colleagues who remembered her talent, resilience and presence both on and off screen.
Among the most heartbreaking reactions came from actress Selma Blair, who expressed her disbelief in an emotional message: “I love you. Don’t be gone. Don’t be gone. Please. Please.”
Viola Davis, who worked alongside Panettiere in the 2016 drama Custody, also remembered the actress, reflecting on her talent and the depth she brought to her work. Bethany Joy Lenz, who knew Panettiere from her early years on Guiding Light, recalled the vibrant spirit she displayed even as a young performer.
David Arquette, Melissa Barrera, Rosie O’Donnell, Kelly Osbourne, Jeremy Renner and Jay Shetty were also among the entertainers who publicly shared their grief and memories following the news.
A Career That Began in Childhood
Born in New York in 1989, Panettiere began acting as a child and eventually became one of the most recognizable young stars of her generation.
Her breakthrough came as Claire Bennet in NBC’s Heroes, where her portrayal of the seemingly indestructible cheerleader helped turn the series into a pop-culture phenomenon.
She later starred as country singer Juliette Barnes on ABC’s Nashville, a performance that earned her two Golden Globe nominations. Her film credits included Remember the Titans, Raising Helen and multiple installments of the Scream franchise. She returned to the role of Kirby Reed in 2023’s Scream VI after taking a hiatus from acting.
Panettiere was also a singer and voice performer, contributing to soundtracks and lending her voice to animated projects and video games during a career that stretched across more than three decades.
Remembering Her Resilience
Away from the screen, Panettiere had spoken publicly about difficult periods in her life, including struggles with addiction and postpartum depression. Earlier in 2026, she released her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, in which she reflected candidly on her career and personal experiences.
Her death comes three years after the death of her younger brother, actor Jansen Panettiere, in 2023.
Panettiere’s family confirmed her passing through a statement released by her representative, describing her as an extraordinary presence who brought love and joy to the people around her. As of Monday, an official cause of death had not been publicly disclosed.
She is survived by her daughter, Kaya, and her parents.
For the generation that watched Panettiere grow from child performer to television star, her death at only 36 has been particularly difficult to process. The messages pouring in from Hollywood reflect not only admiration for the characters she brought to life, but affection for the person behind them.
And perhaps Selma Blair’s simple plea captured the shock felt by so many: a wish that the news somehow wasn’t real.
