Kaylee Hottle, the young Deaf actress who captivated audiences with her performance as Jia in two films from the Godzilla franchise, has died following a car crash in Maryland. She was 18 years old.
The accident occurred during the early morning hours of Tuesday, July 21, in Ijamsville, Maryland. Hottle was traveling as a passenger in a vehicle that left the roadway and struck a culvert shortly before 3 a.m., according to authorities.
She was airlifted from the scene but later died from her injuries. The 19-year-old driver was transported to a hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, while another passenger declined medical treatment. Investigators believe excessive speed may have contributed to the crash, though the circumstances remain under investigation.
Her Family Shares Its Grief
Hottle’s parents, Joshua and Ketsi Hottle, confirmed their daughter’s death through emotional video messages delivered in American Sign Language.
Her father said that Kaylee’s mother and four siblings were together at home mourning the devastating loss, while he traveled to Maryland to bring his daughter’s body home.
He expressed gratitude for the 18 years the family was able to share with her, while acknowledging how deeply they wished they could have had more time.
In an extraordinary message of compassion, Joshua Hottle also addressed the driver of the vehicle and publicly offered his forgiveness.
“I have forgiven you,” he said. “Don’t let this incident ruin the rest of your life.”
Hottle’s mother said she could still feel her daughter’s presence with the family.

Hottle became internationally recognized after portraying Jia in the 2021 blockbuster Godzilla vs. Kong.
