Former Caifanes guitarist Alejandro Marcovich is continuing his recovery at home after spending several weeks hospitalized following a stroke that left him in a coma, offering hope to fans across Latin America and the global rock community.

According to his wife, Gabriela Martínez, the 66-year-old musician has been discharged from a Mexico City hospital and is now receiving specialized therapies from home after doctors determined it was safer for him to continue his rehabilitation outside the hospital environment.

“It’s been one miracle after another, from the day of the stroke until today,” Martínez told Billboard Español. “He has a tremendous will to live. He has shown incredible inner strength, and the doctors are surprised by everything he has overcome—from the stroke itself to the complications that followed—and by how favorably he is recovering.”

Marcovich suffered the stroke on May 19 and remained hospitalized for nearly two months. His wife explained that physicians decided to discharge him to reduce the risk of hospital-acquired infections after his condition stabilized.

“He was no longer in a coma, he was no longer intubated,” Martínez said. “He is now receiving different therapies so he can continue improving. He had many health complications, but he is getting better and can now eat on his own.”

A Long History of Health Challenges

The recent medical emergency is not the first major health battle Marcovich has faced.

In 2010, he underwent surgery after being diagnosed with a brain tumor. More than a decade later, in 2022, he revealed that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Despite those challenges, his family says his resilience has once again been extraordinary.

Martínez also shared that she and their sons, Béla and Diego Marcovich, have been deeply moved by the overwhelming support received from fellow musicians, friends and fans from around the world.

“His musical legacy lives in the hearts of so many people,” she said. “Now many young people are discovering Alejandro’s enormous contribution to an essential part of rock music in Mexico.”

The Guitarist Behind Caifanes’ Defining Sound

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1960, Marcovich moved to Mexico with his family during the 1970s after they went into exile following Argentina’s 1976 military coup.

He became one of the defining figures of Mexican rock as guitarist, arranger and co-producer for Caifanes, joining the band in 1989 after previously performing with Las Insólitas Imágenes de Aurora.

During his tenure with Caifanes, Marcovich helped shape some of the band’s most celebrated recordings, including the acclaimed El Nervio del Volcán (1994), which featured the iconic single “Aquí No Es Así.”

Although creative differences between Marcovich and frontman Saúl Hernández contributed to the band’s breakup in the mid-1990s, Caifanes reunited in 2011 for what became one of the most celebrated reunions in Latin rock history.

A Lasting Legacy in Latin Rock

Widely regarded as one of the most influential guitarists in Mexican rock history, Marcovich’s work helped define the sound of a generation through timeless songs such as “Aquí No Es Así,” “La Negra Tomasa,” and “Mátenme Porque Me Muero.”

His influence remains as relevant as ever. Earlier this year, Billboard ranked Caifanes among the Top 10 Greatest Latin Rock Bands of All Time, recognizing the group’s enduring impact on Latin music and culture.

As Marcovich continues his rehabilitation, fans across the world are celebrating the encouraging news and wishing one of Latin rock’s most respected musicians a full recovery.
