One of the pioneers of hip-hop (and sneaker influencers before influencers were a thing), the legendary music group Run-DMC has been immortalized in its hometown city of New York.
Ahead of this week’s “50th Anniversary of Hip-Hop” celebration in New York, Adidas Originals teamed up with Run-DMC for a limited pop-up event where Mayor Eric Adams proclaimed August 9 as “Run-DMC Day” to honor the achievements and contributions of the group.
Run-DMC’s connection with Adidas dates all the way back to 1986 with the release of the “My Adidas” track from their third studio album, Raising Hell. The specific Adidas sneaker referenced in the song was the iconic Superstar, and since then, the shelltoe model has been synonymous with the hip-hop group. Throughout the years, Adidas has also produced several special edition styles as a nod to the group.
“Adidas Originals is intricately woven into the fabric of Hip Hop culture,” Rupert Campbell, president of Adidas North America, said. “As a brand that embodies authentic creativity, we are so proud that we brought the Superstar to Run-DMC and they brought it to the world.”
Readers who are interested in checking out the Run-DMC x Adidas pop-up event can do so from now until Aug. 12 at Bleecker Trading in New York City.
