‘STAR WARS’ MEMORY: HOW HAN SOLO ALMOST GOT SWINDLED

In Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and Obi-Wan (Alec Guinness) are in desperate need of transportation. They need to flee from the desert planet Tatooine to Alderaan, the home planet of Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher).

In a cantina, they meet and quickly hire Han Solo (Harrison Ford), Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew) and their ship Millennium Falconfor a small down payment, with a sizable additional payment promised upon completion of the mission. Watch the introductory scene below.

It’s a memorable introduction of the swashbuckling Solo, whose mercenary ways are tested time and again throughout the movie as he is slowly drawn to the higher purposes of the adventure. His first real test comes when the small group discovers that the planet Alderaan has been destroyed. Even though the original agreement has been fulfilled, Solo agrees to press onward when he’s told that Princess Leia is wealthy and could offer an even greater reward.

But it wasn’t always that way. As The Hollywood Reporter reminds, an audition video of the crucial scene revealed that the original script called for Luke to tell Han that neither he nor Obi-Wan actually had the remainder of the payment promised, which doesn’t sit well with Han.

Watch the scene below.

Via social media, Mark Hamill commented: “Biggest loss in our audition scene? Classic Solo line: ‘I’m beginning to not like you.'”

Reflecting their continued warm relationship after 40 years, Hamill also shared another photo of himself with Ford.
